← Back to Greece Travel Guide

Athens is the heart of most Greece trips: a walkable capital of ruins, neighbourhood tavernas, and a museum built to show the Parthenon sculptures. Book the Acropolis online, then leave room to wander — the city rewards slow mornings in Plaka and late light on the limestone plateau.

Two full days cover the rock, the Acropolis Museum, and an evening under the floodlit monument. Three days adds the ancient Agora and a neighbourhood that is not a souvenir lane. Five days is when Delphi or Cape Sounion stops feeling like a raid. Use the cards below for the detail; the sections after them cover where to sleep, what to see first, and how to leave the city without wasting a morning.

Athens Travel Tips

Tickets, metro, heat, and where to stay without wasting a first morning.

What to see

No Greece trip is complete without the Acropolis. The plateau rises 156 metres above the city, crowned by the Parthenon (447–432 BC). The site also includes the Erechtheion and its Porch of the Caryatids, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Propylaea gateway. Book timed-entry tickets in peak season — walk-up queues in July and August can eat a morning. Go at opening or after the midday heat; marble reflects the sun.

Pair the rock with the Acropolis Museum at the foot of the hill, designed to showcase the Parthenon sculptures in a contemporary gallery. The ancient Agora — where Socrates taught — and the Temple of Hephaestus, one of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples in the world, sit below. If you have a third morning, the National Archaeological Museum holds the broader story of Greek art that the Acropolis does not try to tell.

Where to stay

Monastiraki, Plaka, and Koukaki are all walking distance from the Acropolis. Plaka is the postcard lanes — charming at 8am, crowded with souvenir shops by afternoon. Koukaki, on the south side of the hill, is quieter at night and still a short walk to the museum. Monastiraki suits souvlaki, metro connections, and a first-timer who wants to walk out of the hotel and already be in the city.

Boutique hotels have filled these neighbourhoods; family pensions and rooftop rooms with Acropolis views book early in summer. You do not need a car in central Athens. You do need comfortable shoes — marble, cobbles, and stairs.

Easy day trip

Delphi is about 2.5 hours from Athens — a full day for the sanctuary of the oracle on Mount Parnassus. Go early on a weekday so you reach the terrace before coaches fill it. An overnight in Delphi or Arachova is kinder if you dislike a long return coach.

Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon are the shorter coastal alternative, about 1.5 hours from the centre, especially rewarding at sunset. Hydra, in the Saronic Gulf, is a car-free harbour reached by hydrofoil from Piraeus if you want an island night without a Cyclades ferry.
