Mykonos is the cosmopolitan Cycladic island: whitewashed lanes, a famous row of windmills, and beaches that run from family bays to peak-season clubs. Town (Chora) is the overnight base; the rest is a short bus or taxi. The party reputation is real after midnight in July and August — and irrelevant on a June morning when the lanes belong to residents and the first coffee. Two or three nights covers town, the windmills, and one beach. Five nights if nightlife is the trip.

Mykonos Travel Tips

Where to sleep, how to reach the beaches, and when to book.

Little Venice and the windmills

The Kato Mili windmills sit above the water on the edge of town — the island’s signature silhouette, best early or at golden hour when cruise-day midday is the crush. Little Venice is the row of houses with balconies over the sea, photogenic before the cocktail hour and loud after it. Pair both with a wander inland through Chora’s maze: churches, white cubes, and shops that you do not need to enter. Lose the map for an hour in the morning; that is the Mykonos that exists besides the clubs.

Beaches and getting around

Ornos and Agios Ioannis are easier swimming bays than Super Paradise if you want water more than a DJ. Paradise and Super Paradise are the famous club beaches — peak season is the point for some travellers and the reason to avoid the island for others. Buses from Fabrika and the old port cover the main strands. A car or ATV helps for quieter coves. Shoulder season (June and September) is kinder on prices, sleep, and whether you can walk Little Venice without a queue for a table.

When to come and how to arrive

Ferries from Piraeus take about 3–5 hours on fast services; summer flights into JMK are frequent. Book both early in July and August. Mykonos Town hotels near the windmills sell out. Stay in Chora if you want to walk to dinner; beach hotels make town a taxi project after midnight. Confirm ferry times the night before — the meltemi wind can shuffle the Cyclades.

June and September for swimming without August prices. July–August are busiest and most expensive. Winter is very quiet, with many venues closed.

No. Mornings in the lanes and a windmill walk are classic Cyclades. The reputation comes from a handful of beach clubs and town bars after midnight.

Not for town plus one beach by bus. Rent one if you want several coves in a day.
