The island is simple if you pick one hotel and let buses do the rest. The expensive mistakes are a late Oia hotel booking and a car you cannot park.
Book the room first
Cave hotels in Oia and Imerovigli sell out 6–12 months ahead for summer. The view is the product. If you are flexible, Fira still has more inventory. Read the location on the map: “caldera view” and “five minutes from Oia centre” are not the same thing.
Buses over taxis at dusk
Sunset traffic into Oia is grim. Ride the bus earlier and walk, or stay put in your own village. Taxis queue and surge. The Fira–Oia bus is the local trick if you refuse to drive.
Car for one day only
Useful for wineries, Akrotiri, and Kamari. Unnecessary — and parking-painful — if you only want the caldera villages. ATVs look fun and are easy to crash on the rim road. Drive slowly; hire insurance that you actually understand.
Ferries, flights and bags
Athinios port is steep. Pack a bag you can carry. High-speed ferries from Piraeus take 5–8 hours; flights from ATH are short and often worth it in peak season. Confirm the boat the night before — wind can delay Cyclades sailings.
Heat, water and shoes
The caldera path has little shade. Tap water is better bottled on the island. Shoes with grip for marble and cobbles; the lanes are not a beach. Dress modestly if you enter a church — many will lend a wrap.
