Italy is more than Rome — though the Colosseum is still where many trips begin. The best places to visit in Italy mix one capital of ruins and trattorie with one Renaissance city, one lagoon, and one cliff coast, plus at least one slower town that is not a cruise stop. Use this as a map for a first visit from India, not a checklist to finish in a week.

Quick Answer: Where to Go First

If you have 7 days, choose Rome and Florence on Frecciarossa. With 10 days, add Venice and the Amalfi Coast or Cinque Terre. With 14 days, you can link the classic circuit and still add Pompeii or Bologna without treating stations as the holiday.

1. Rome

The Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine on a combined ticket; Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel (book weeks ahead); Trevi at dawn; the Pantheon free under its oculus; Trastevere after dark. Three nights is the comfortable minimum. Rome travel guide →

2. Florence

Brunelleschi’s dome, the Uffizi, Michelangelo’s David, Ponte Vecchio, Oltrarno dinners, and Piazzale Michelangelo at dusk. Two nights covers the essentials; three adds Chianti. Florence travel guide →

3. Venice

Step off the train onto the Grand Canal. Vaporetto Line 1, St Mark’s mosaics, Doge’s Palace, cicchetti in Cannaregio or Dorsoduro. Stay two nights so you see the city after day-trippers leave. Venice travel guide →

4. Amalfi Coast

Positano, Amalfi town, Ravello, boat days to Capri, the Path of the Gods. Three nights after Naples. Pompeii belongs on the Naples side of the transfer. Amalfi Coast travel guide →

5. Cinque Terre

Five cliff villages on the Ligurian Sea — Manarola is the coloured stack most people photograph. Walkable, crowded in summer, still worth two nights if you skip Amalfi. More hidden gems of Italy →

6. Pompeii and Bologna

Pompeii is the Roman city Vesuvius buried — half a day from Naples. Bologna is porticoes, towers, and the ragù people misname abroad. Both sit on or beside the classic rail line; neither needs a separate holiday.

How to Combine These Places

  • 7 days: Rome (4 nights) + Florence (3 nights).
  • 10 days: Rome 3, Florence 2, Venice 2, Amalfi or Cinque Terre 3.
  • 14 days: The classic route plus Pompeii, Bologna, or extra Tuscany.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a first trip: Rome, Florence, Venice, and either the Amalfi Coast or Cinque Terre. Add Pompeii if you pass Naples, and Bologna if you have a rail hour between Florence and Venice.

Rome is enough for a 4–5 day city break. If you have 10 days, add Florence and Venice so the trip is not only the capital.

Ten days comfortably covers Rome, Florence, Venice, and Amalfi or Cinque Terre. Adding Sicily in the same window usually means too much flying.

Amalfi is cliffs, boats, and Positano — easier after a Naples train. Cinque Terre is five walking villages on the Ligurian coast, better if you are already in the north. Do not do both on a 10-day first trip.

Only if you fly into Malpensa or want fashion and The Last Supper. It is not on the classic Rome–Florence–Venice circuit.
