Ari Atoll is why many people skip a second North Malé resort: South Ari has resident whale sharks year-round, and Dhigurah puts a guesthouse in that water at USD 60–100 a night. Luxury resorts in the atoll sell the same animals as a guided excursion. Keep three metres. Do not touch. The seaplane is daylight-only if you booked a remote property.

Whale sharks in South Ari

This is the reliable Maldives encounter — not a guarantee, but the best odds in the country. Morning boats from Dhigurah or from a resort dive centre. USD 40–60 from a local shop; more as a resort outing. Manta rays show as well. The house reef still has turtles and reef sharks if the giants do not appear that day.

Dhigurah versus a private-island resort

Dhigurah is small, quiet, and set up for snorkel boats. Maafushi is livelier and closer to Malé. A South Ari resort is the overwater-villa version of the same atoll. Pick one base. Day-tripping whale sharks from Malé as a one-shot is a long, brittle day.

Getting in

Speedboat from Malé or Maafushi (often about an hour to Dhigurah). Remote resorts: seaplane 25–45 minutes, daylight only. If you land after dark, sleep in Malé or Hulhumalé and fly in the morning.

For whale sharks, yes — you are in South Ari. Maafushi is easier from the airport and livelier. Many 7-day local trips do both.

South Ari local islands are typically a 1–2 hour speedboat. Resorts further out use seaplanes. Confirm with your property, not a blog map from 2019.

No for snorkelling whale sharks. Discover-scuba and PADI courses exist at dive centres. Keep distance; never grab a shark.

No. Dhigurah is a budget local island. The atoll also holds some of the country’s famous private-island resorts.
