Chiang Mai is the gentler half of a first Thailand trip: a moated Old City of Lanna temples, a mountain wat that watches the valley, and a food culture that is not Bangkok’s street-stall sprint. Two nights covers the walls and Doi Suthep. Three lets you add an ethical elephant morning without treating the sanctuary as a raid. Come for the north, not a second capital.

Chiang Mai Travel Tips

Where to sleep, how to book sanctuaries, and temple etiquette in the north.

Old City temples and Doi Suthep

More than thirty wats sit inside the square moat. Wat Chedi Luang’s broken 15th-century chedi and Wat Phra Singh’s Lanna woodwork are the two that earn a slow morning. Doi Suthep — Wat Phra That Doi Suthep — sits 15 kilometres west on a forested ridge. Climb the naga staircase or take the funicular; the golden chedi and the view over the Ping Valley are why people come north. Dress for temples: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off in the viharn.

Elephants, food and Nimman

Choose a sanctuary that does not offer riding, hooks, or shows. Elephant Nature Park and similar rescue projects book out 2–4 weeks ahead in peak season. Chiang Mai is also Thailand’s easiest cooking-class city — green curry, tom kha, and a recipe card in an afternoon. Eat khao soi, the north’s coconut-curry noodles, at a shop-house rather than a hotel buffet. Nimmanhaemin is the cafe and craft-beer strip; Tha Phae Gate is the more central Old City base.

Getting around and when to go

A one-hour flight from Bangkok (AirAsia, Thai Lion Air) beats the overnight train if you only have two nights. Songthaews and Grab cover the city; a scooter is useful for Nimman and the mountain road if you already ride confidently. November–February is the comfortable window. March–May is hot and smoky in some years (burning season). Pair Chiang Mai with Bangkok on the classic 10-day circuit rather than treating it as a standalone city break.

Chiang Mai Travel FAQs

Two nights covers the Old City and Doi Suthep. Three nights adds an elephant sanctuary or a cooking class without rushing. Five nights is for Pai or a slower north.

November to January is coolest and clearest. Mid-February through April is burning season — haze can be a genuine health issue. The rainy season (June–October) is quieter and still workable for temples.

No. Choose sanctuaries that do not offer riding, trekking, or shows. You feed, bathe, and walk with rescued elephants. Book ahead in peak season.

Tha Phae Gate and the Old City for temples on foot. Nimman for cafes and a younger evening. Both work; pick one and stay put.

A one-hour flight is the practical choice on a 10-day trip. Overnight trains exist if you have extra time and want the journey.
