Spain is more than Barcelona — though Gaudí is still where many trips aim. The best places to visit in Spain mix one capital of museums and tapas with one Mediterranean architecture city and one Andalucía palace, plus at least one slower hill town that is not a cruise stop. Use this as a map for a first visit, not a checklist to finish in a week.

Quick Answer: Where to Go First

If you have 7 days, choose Madrid and Barcelona on the AVE. With 10 days, do Madrid, Seville, and Granada. With 14 days, you can link the capital, Gaudí, and Andalucía without treating stations as the holiday.

1. Madrid

The Prado, Thyssen, and Reina Sofía sit on one boulevard — Velázquez, Goya, Picasso’s Guernica. Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace, and Retiro Park are the outdoor counterpoint. Tapas in La Latina and rooftops on Gran Vía fill the evenings. The city is also Spain’s AVE hub: 2.5 hours to Barcelona or Seville.

Stay in Chueca, Malasaña, or La Latina. Three nights is enough before a train; five nights lets you add Toledo without rushing. Madrid travel guide →

2. Barcelona

Gaudí’s unfinished Sagrada Família, Park Güell’s mosaics, and an Eixample grid of modernista façades still define a first Spain trip. The Gothic Quarter is the medieval core; Gràcia is the neighbourhood for evenings that are not Las Ramblas. Book both main Gaudí tickets as soon as dates are fixed.

Three nights covers the two timed entries and one slower walk. Barcelona travel guide →

3. Seville

The largest Gothic cathedral in the world, the Real Alcázar next door, and flamenco that still belongs to Triana. Santa Cruz is the whitewashed maze between the monuments. Spring is orange blossom and festivals; July is 40°C.

Two or three nights covers cathedral, palace, and one tablao. Seville travel guide →

4. Granada

The Alhambra is Spain’s most visited monument: Nasrid Palaces, Generalife gardens, and the Sierra Nevada behind the walls. Stay in the Albaicín for the floodlit view after dark. Tickets are strictly timed — book official slots the moment your dates are confirmed.

Two nights is the minimum; do not day-trip the palaces from Seville on a first visit. Granada travel guide →

5. Toledo

The former city of three cultures, perched above the Tagus: Gothic cathedral, synagogues, and a perfectly preserved mosque-turned-church. Thirty minutes by AVE from Madrid. A superb day trip or overnight. More hidden gems of Spain →

6. San Sebastián and Córdoba

San Sebastián (Donostia) is pintxos, La Concha Bay, and a Basque food culture that outshines almost any city of its size. Córdoba’s Mezquita — a forest of red-and-white arches with a cathedral embedded inside — is the Andalucía stop between Madrid and Seville. Neither belongs on a rushed 7-day Gaudí-only ticket.

7. The coasts and islands

Costa del Sol, Costa Brava, Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca, Formentera, and the Canaries (Tenerife’s Teide, Maspalomas dunes, La Palma stargazing) are Spain as beach and volcano. They are excellent — and they steal nights from the cities above. Add them when the trip is the coast, or when you have 16 days.

How to Combine These Places

  • 7 days: Madrid (3 nights) + Barcelona (4 nights), AVE between them.
  • 10 days: Madrid, Seville, and Granada — the Andalucía circuit, with Alhambra tickets booked first.
  • 14 days: Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Granada, plus Toledo or Córdoba as a rail stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a first trip: Madrid, Barcelona, and one Andalucía base such as Seville or Granada. Add Toledo as a Madrid day, and Córdoba if you are already on the Andalucía rail line.

Barcelona is enough for a short city break of 3–4 days. If you have a week or more, add Madrid on the AVE, or fly south to Andalucía so the trip is not only Catalonia.

Ten days comfortably covers Madrid plus Seville and Granada, or Madrid plus Barcelona with a Toledo day. Adding the Basque Country and the Alhambra in the same window usually means too much travel.

Seville is easier: cathedral, Alcázar, flamenco, and a 2.5-hour AVE from Madrid. Granada is the Alhambra — it needs its own two nights and a timed ticket. Many 10–14 day trips use both.

Only if Spain is a beach holiday. Mallorca, Ibiza, and the Canaries are excellent — and they steal nights from Madrid, Barcelona, and the Alhambra. Save them for a return, or build 16 days.
